2015: Kaduna Muslims, Christians vow to resist violence

KADUNA–Christians and Muslims in Kaduna State
yesterday vowed to resist any attempt to introduce violence
in the 2015 general elections.
The Muslims, under the aegis of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam,
JNI, and the Christians Association of Nigeria, CAN, in the
state also pledged that anybody or group of persons
planning to engage in violence or harbouring anyone or
persons with violent intent during the general elections
would be fished out and handed over to security agents.
The groups, which came together under the auspices of the
Global Peace Foundation in the country, agreed that the
2011 political violence, which led to the death of scores of
persons and destruction of property worth billions of Naira
was the last such hostilities in the state.
In her address on the occasion, the wife of Kaduna State
governor, Hajiya Fatima Yero said, “All mothers must
ensure that they teach their children the virtues of love,
tolerance and respect for the dignity of the other person.
“With the vows you have all taken today to resist violence in
the coming elections, I believe that we shall have a peaceful
Christmas. We shall build on it for an enduring peace in
Kaduna State.”
The Special Adviser to Governor Yero on Christian matters,
Rev. Joseph Hayab on his part, said both the rich and poor
suffer during conflicts.
Said Hayab: “The rich and powerful and the poor are denied
sleep during crisis, all for reasons that can be avoided,
because in the end, no one benefits”.
Also Speaking, the Special Adviser to Yero on Islamic
Affairs, Sheik Haliru Maraya said: “Anytime their was
violence, and government property was destroyed, the
money that would have been used for other developmental
projects would be used in repairing them. And we keep
wondering why we are not progressing. Islam teaches
peace and tolerance to all religions as shown in the
exemplary life of the Holy Prophet of Islam.
“We must stand together during this election and say, no to
violence.”
The Secretary of CAN, Kaduna State, Rev. Sunday Ibrahim,
also said all Christains were out for peace.
