One of the stars of Mo Abudu's Naija Diamonds Season 2 which held in 2012, Joshua Adah, was hacked to death in Taraba State on January 23rd by Fulani Herdsmen. According to reports, Joshua, who is a father of two and had a ministry in Taraba where he provided medicine and clothing for hundreds of poor people in his community, was returning to his mission station in Bantaje, a village near Jalingo, from an evangelistic outreach to some villagers when his vehicle broke down along the Wukari-Jalingo road. He was then attacked by ethnic Fulani cattlemen., who had invaded Christian communities a week before. Continue... Pastor Adah, a graduate of Ahmadu Bello University, decided to live in Taraba after he was posted there in 2002 upon finishing his university. He met his wife there and also saw what children of the poor were going through in the community and decided to stay behind and help improve their lives. He left city life and moved to a remote village with his family, where he built a school in a round hut that provided free education to a student population that grew to more than 400 pupils. 1st four (4) story building to be build in Nigeria #throwback

A visit to the first storey building in Nigeria revealed many things about its historical significance, writes ARUKAINO UMUKORO The whispers of palm trees from afar off welcome any visitor to Badagry, the serene town which is home to some of Nigeria’s famous historical sites. It is also home to the country’s first storey building. From the building, which overlooks the Marina waterfront, one could hear the sound of the waves of the ocean waters. Currently donning a fresh coat of white paint, with its wooden windows painted in light blue colours, the 168- year-old building, which is located in a sprawling compound in the town hundreds of miles away from Ikeja, the Lagos capital, still holds the aura of historical significance for any visitor. “The foundation of the building was laid in 1842, although it was built by the missionaries in 1845. The first storey building is a monument today and many people come to see it every week. It also contains pictures of the first missionaries who came to Badagry and that of the late Bishop Samuel Ajayi-Crowther, the first African Anglican Bishop in Nigeria; who helped the missionaries to translate the Bible into Yoruba,” Ezekiel Viavonu, an indigene of the town and curator of the building, explained. The said Bibles – the Yoruba and English versions – are located side by side in a glass casing in one of the two rooms on the upper floor of the building. “While the English Bible is 171 years old, the Yoruba Bible is 168 years old. The Yoruba Bible was printed in Great Britain by Lowe and Brydon Printer Limited, London,” Viavonu noted. According to the curator, the first missionaries came to Badagry in September, 1842. “These were Thomas Birch Freeman of the Methodist Church, England, and his assistant, Reverend Deegraft. In December, 1942, Reverend Henry Townsend of the Christian Missionary Society also came to join them in Badagry to spread the gospel. They used to preach under a tree called Agiya tree. The Badagry town hall was built where the tree was once located,” he explained On the ground floor, one could still see some of the materials used for building, including the bricks, nails, the hinges to mount the doors and the iron corrugated sheets to roof the building. ‘1842’ was written on one of the corrugated sheets in one the rooms where the labourers was said to have stayed. A part of one of the rooms where some of the building items were placed is decorated with thin bamboos. The floor also housed the room of the ‘first teacher in Nigeria’, Mr Claudius Philips. Philips, who wore a black shirt, suit and a white trouser in the portrait which adorned the wall, lived in the room for 23 years, from 1845 to 1868. Philips was said to have built the first primary school in Nigeria called St. Thomas Primary School, which was established in 1845 with 40 men. According to the history, the pupils spent 12 years in the primary school. There are no historical records of the pupils, but Viavonu said they also became teachers themselves. The floors are connected by a wooden staircase which seem to require renovation. Another staircase leads to the upper floor from outside. There are also two rooms upstairs, as well as a sitting room, two stores and a safe. One of the rooms upstairs was where Ajayi-Crowther lived in for seven years, between 1843 and 1850, said Viavonu. A picture of Ajayi-Crowther’s grandson, Herbert Macaulay, hung on the wall. Inside one of the rooms where the Bibles were placed sits a missionary trust fund box, with an inscription encouraging visitors to ‘donate generously to the maintenance of this building.’ From the look of it, the building will make do with more donations, as the source of light was the afternoon sunshine from the open windows. The portraits of Freeman and Townsend were in the sitting room, while the other room had the pictures of Ajayi- Crowther and that of Reverend C.A Gollmer, the first CMS parsonage said to have finally completed the building in 1845. A wooden bench, the first bench used by the missionary, is also kept in the room. Just at the extreme, beside one of the rooms, was a safe designed in 1856 in West Bromwich, UK. It was used by the missionaries to store their valuables, as well as their documents and Bibles. There was also a well inside the compound which Viavonu said was dug in 1842 and served as drinking water for some in the community. Just then, a woman walked into the compound to fetch water from the well. On enquiry, she acknowledged that this was indeed the first storey building in Nigeria. History is not lost on the young generations in the vicinity. About two hundred metres away from the building, our correspondent accosted some children in the community who also recognised the significance of having the first storey building in Nigeria in Badagry. “I have visited there and I saw the English and Yoruba Bibles,” said one named Godwin. “I enjoyed my visit there because I learnt a lot of things about the missionaries who came here first,” said another called Cynthia. Although there is a counter claim by some historians that a few multi-storey mud structures may have existed in the northern part of Nigeria before 1845, when the first storey building was completed in Badagry, it is generally accepted that it is the first ‘European’ storey building in Nigeria’. Nevertheless, it still holds a significant place in the country’s history. If well preserved, the first storey building will remain a tourist attraction and historical landmark for many years to come.

YOUR OPINION:- Should INEC Postpone The Election To Allow More People Collect Their PVC?

Away from the political campaign by the 2 major political parties in the country, there is another issue that has become a source of controversy. It is the collection of Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) by registered voters by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Daily Trust reports: “A total of 15.5 million Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), representing 29 per cent, are yet to be distributed, according to a document of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)”. Many Nigerians are agitated by the fact that they have not been able to collect their PVC and the National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki was reported to have said he had discussed the matter with the INEC Chairman Prof Attahiru Jega, adding that a delay within the time allowed by the law will not be a bad idea. “That is what we are encouraging at the moment,” he said, noting that INEC had been able to distribute 30 million PVCs but had an outstanding 38.8 million others to hand out. “The provision (for holding a general election) is for not more than 90 days and not less than 30 days before the end of the administration.” So what do you think? Should INEC postpone the elections to allow more Nigerians collect their PVC and vote or should the elections hold regardless of the millions that might potentially miss out on voting if they do not get their PVCs in time?

Storm rocks Oba of Lagos stool

A storm is raging over the Oba of Lagos stool presently occupied by Oba Rilwan Akiolu. At the centre of the storm is the Akinsemoyin Royal family of Lagos which is accusing the Monarch’s family line of monopolising the stool for centuries. According to findings by Daily Times Nigeria, since inception of Lagos, two royal families have been in existence, rotating the Obaship stool. They are the Akinsemoyin and the Ologunkutere families. The two are said to be the descendants of King Ado, the son of Ashipa who founded Lagos and reigned around1570 . Ado, who reigned after him had three children- Gabaro, Akinsemoyin, both males and Erelu Kuti, female whose son, Ologunkutere started the Ologunkutere family branch since a woman cannot be king. But Gabaro had no surviving child, hence leaving only Akinsemoyin and Ologunkutere to rotate the Obaship of Lagos Stool between them. Akinsemoyin was said to have reigned first between 1704 and 1749, whose reign spanned 45 years. After him came his sister’s son, Ologunkutere, whom Akinsemoyin insisted should reign after him in succession in order to maintain the rotation. However, since the Ologunkutere assumed the stool in 1749, the family has not allowed the Akinsemoyin family near the throne as they have been relegated to the background. The Akinsemoyin family has now moved to challenge the status quo alleging that the incumbent is planning to substitute his branch with the Akinsemoyin family in order to make it extinct. The Ologunkutere or Erelu Kuti family has five branches- Akitoye, Adele-Ajosun, Eshinloku, Olusi and Akiolu, who were the children of Ologunkutere while the Akinsemoyin Ruling House comprises of six branches- Sadeko, Amore/Olukokun, Abisako, Jolasun, Gbosebi, Ambose, Adeyalu and Aderogba. The first major move the Akinsemoyin family made in order to recover their lost stool was shortly before and after the installation of Oba Adeyinka Oyekan, when they protested their being schemed out from the stool for about 200 years. Thus, following the widespread clamour and protest against the injustice, the state government in 1975 set up the Sholanke Tribunal of Inquiry into the Lagos Chieftaincy including the Oba of Lagos Chieftaincy. The tribunal, after its sittings where many people gave evidence submitted its report on 15 January, 1976. In its report, it concluded that there should be two ruling houses in Lagos- the Akinsemoyin and Erelu Kuti, adding that the next ruling house should be Akin semoyin since the current one was from Erelu Kuti. Perhaps to further shed more light on the branches, the state government sent the report of the inquiry to another tribunal headed by Justice J. O. Kassim which submitted its report on 19 September 1978 and also recommended six branches – Sadeko, Amore/Olukokun, Abisako, Jolasun, Gbosebi and Aina Egbe who were the children of Akinsemoyin. Erelu Kuti’s branches were given as Akitoye, Adele-Ajosun, Eshinloku, Olusi and Akiolu. The report, as accepted by the state government also indicated that there should be two ruling houses for the Oba of Lagos stool- Akinsemoyin ruling house and Erelu Kuti ruling house and that since the current ruling house is Erelu Kuti, the next ruling house should be Akinsemoyin. The recommendations were placed before the Council of Lagos Chiefs which unanimously accepted and endorsed the report. It was then sent by the Lagos State government to Oba Oyekan as the Chairman of the Lagos Island Chieftaincy Committee before it could be registered. But since then nothing has been heard. After the demise of Oba Oyekan, the Akinsemoyin fam ily presented candidates for the throne but before anybody knew anything, Oba Akiolu had been nominated suddenly and taken to Iga Iduganran , on 23 May, 2003 for traditional rites. The Akinsemoyin family then went to court to stop the process demanding that it was its turn to present a candidate for the stool having been shut out for so long. But to preempt them, the state government quickly announced Rilwan Akiolu as the new Oba of Lagos. Promptly, the Akinsemoyin challenged the nomination and the eventual coronation of Akiolu in court and the case ragedin court for some time, raising tension in the city of aquatic splendor. But the tension was doused when the Oniru of Iruland approached the court asking to be allowed to meditate and later brokered a terms of settlement between the two royal families for peace to reign. Part of the terms agreed upon included: that after the reign of Akiolu, the Akinsemoyin family should present the candidate to fill the vacancy of Oba of Lagos. As a result of this agreement, the Akinsemoyin family withdrew the case from court for an amicable settlement. However, since the terms were agreed upon, Oba Akiolu has not signed the agreement for over a year now, raising tension that Akinsemoyin may be shut out again. The family has been in limbo since then. The head of the family, Alhaji Prince S.M. Olowonifela Akinsemoyin told Daily Times Nigeria that the family was at a quandary over the injustice meted out to them pointing out that they might be forced to return to Court. According to him, the Ologunkutere family has been us ing power and might to cheat them out of their inalienable right. He assured that they were ready to go to any extent to seek redress. However, when contacted, Oba Akiolu said it was a storm in a tea cup. According to him, they were all one and the same family pointing out that the Akinsemoyin family had nowhere to go but to come to the palace where he said everything will be resolved amicably like brothers.

Actor Muna Obiekwe has died

Actor Muna Obiekwe has died
 www.gladys.mysyntek.com
Yes, it's true! Actor Muna Obiekwe has died. He died this afternoon around 4:15pm in a hospital in Lagos after a battle with kidney failure. He was rushed to the hospital today after he collapsed at his home. Muna has been quietly battling this kidney disease but kept it hush hush from friends and colleagues. So Sad! A colleague said for over two weeks before he died didn't go for his dialysis.

Muna needed money for his health problems but instead of going public to raise money, he told friends he was planning a stage play to raise money but died before he could do it. Unbelievably sad!

Meanwhile, there's some twitter handle called @MunaObiekwe that's denying his death. That is not Muna! Unfortunately the real one is gone. Unbelievable! RIP to a great actor!

Caroline Sam, known in the music industry as Maheeda is a woman renown for her knack of courting controversies like it is some dinner or buffet to her.

On Tuesday, the self acclaimed prostitute turned gospel singer posted a status message on her Blackberry that got many wondering what was amiss with the mother of one. “ I am in trouble” she wrote. Curious as ever, Showtime sought the cause of her trouble and the singer replied by sending a link to a story which chronicled a protest by prostitutes led by a female prostitute, Patoo Abraham on the rights of prostitutes to ply their trade legally like other professions. According to the story, the protest held sometime in Lagos and the commercial sex workers wore T-shirts screaming “Sex work is work, we need our rights.” So, how could this get Maheeda in trouble? We asked her. “Don’t you know that very soon this group may be asking me to come and deliver a speech?” she answered. The groups are operating under the names; Nigerian chapter of African Sex Workers Alliance (ASWA) and the Women of Power Initiative (WOPI). Of course, if the groups would be needing a resource person, who is better qualified than Maheeda who has had both local and international experience on the job. www.gladys.mysyntek.com

Di’Ja on Tiwa Savage: Apart from the Rivalry the Media Made Up, There Was No Rivalry

Mavin Records artist, Di’Ja , is one artist to look out for this 2015. In an interview with Sunday Punch , Di’Ja talks being mixed, racism, the need for a lighter skin colour, being petite, other members of the Mavin Crew and more. Read excerpts from her interview below: On dark skin : I almost feel sorry for our nation because some people think that the lighter the skin colour, the better life will be for the person. Sometimes when I walk on the streets, I see the way our people treat others differently because of skin colour. I think we are now in a black-on- black racist society. Black does not just come in dark shades; some blacks are light-skinned. I did not pick my family. I like to believe my race is humanity. We come in different colours and that does not mean that one person is better than the other. It means that God is an awesome and colourful God. On being intimidated because of her size: Yes, but the mind is a beautiful thing. I am such an odd human being and my mind really helps me. If someone comes to me as a lion, I can literally turn them to a pussy cat by my imagination and they will not look so scary anymore. I feel we try to intimidate people, not because we are mean or wicked, but because it is all we have. It is something that is innate; maybe because we feel the world is not big enough for all of us or we should not all do the same thing. We have to realise that the world is big enough for others. We may not be as successful as the other man, but if we realise that, we will live and do all that we do. On Don Jazzy : Don Jazzy is a clown; if one follows him on Twitter and Instagram, one will find out that he always jokes with his fans. The reason people think he is too serious is because we live in a very judgmental society. Someone always comes up with something. He is not as serious as he looks; looks can be deceiving. On Tiwa Savage : Apart from the rivalry the media made up, there was no rivalry. Right from when I got in, every single person has been supportive and they shared their experiences with me. We get along very fine. I do not see her often, but when I do, it is pretty hilarious. She is funny

Cops Used Black Mugshots For Target Practice

A Florida police force is facing criticism after it emerged its officers used mugshots of black people for target practice. North Miami Beach Police has denied racial profiling in its choice of the images. A Florida National Guard sergeant who visited a gun range last month was stunned to recognise her brother among the images of bullet-riddled faces left by police snipers. Her brother, Woody Deant, served four years in prison for a fatal drag race as a teenager and was released in 2004, according to NBC Florida, which first reported the story. His sister, Valerie, told the station she cried after seeing his 18-year-old face with bullet holes through his forehead and right eye at the firearms centre in Medley, Florida. North Miami Beach Police Chief J Scott Dennis conceded his officers could have shown better judgement. But he told NBC News the sniper team included minority officers, no policies had been violated and none of the officers would be disciplined. Chief Dennis also said such photographic targets were vital for facial recognition drills. But Mr Deant told NBC Florida: "Now I'm being used as a target? "I'm not even living that life according to how they portrayed me as. I'm a father. I'm a husband. I'm a career man. I work nine to five."

NEWS: Rams Arrested by Nigerian Police for Attacking 65 year old Woman in Ado Ekiti

NEWS: Rams Arrested by Nigerian Police for Attacking 65 year old Woman in Ado Ekiti

Two rams have been arrested by the Police in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, for attacking and injuring a 65-year-old woman popularly called ‘Iya Oyo’.
Narrating her ordeal, Iya Oyo said she was on her way to a commercial bank in Okesa area with her son on Monday to withdraw some money when one of the rams reportedly owned by a manager of a filling station in the area, went berserk and gored her, fracturing her right thigh.
The victim, who was writhing in pains at a traditional orthopedic clinic where she was rushed to by sympathisers, said that she fell immediately after the attack and became unconscious only to find herself at the clinic where she regained consciousness.
According to her, “on the fateful day, I was going to the Union Bank with my son. We were walking on the walkway and saw the rams in front of us but not knowing what was on their mind. Immediately they sighted us coming, one of them rushed and hit me several times with its horns. Immediately, I fell but as I was struggling to get up, the second ram joined the first to attack me. Thank God that some people came and saved me from untimely death in the hands of these ‘mad rams’”.
Residents of the town, who pleaded anonymity, described the rams as “too notorious and always ready to attack people at sight”.
“We have complained several times to the owner of the rams to tame them but to no avail. The animals are always roaming the streets and daring people”, they said.
It was learnt that the owner of the rams has since gone into hiding since the attack took place without offering any form of assistance to the victim.
The director of the trado-medical centre, Chief Ezekiel Ogunjemilusi, said Iya Oyo was brought to his clinic with fractures on two sides of her right leg noting that the injury will take few weeks to heal.
Though there was no official statement on the incident, a highly placed police officer at the Area command confirmed the attack.
